Postive 05 July, 2024

The Rath Yatra, or "Festival of Chariots," is the most major event for the Hindu and Buddhist communities in India. On this day every year, thousands of worshippers put up the idols of God Jagannath and his brothers and sisters and ride in chariots to the Gundicha Temple, which is three miles away from the Jagannath Temple. According to the Hindu calendar, Rath Yatra occurs on the 2nd day of Ashadha month, which is either late June or early July. Ashadha Shukla Paksha Dwitiya is the name that has been attributed to this day in historical texts. Rath Yatra will be celebrated on July 7, 2024.

From Jagannath Temple, devotees transport the statues of Lord Krishna, Lord Balabhadra, and Lord Subhadra to Gundicha Temple. After that, the idols are placed inside chariots. On Snana Purnima, priests carry out a custom in which three idols receive a bath in water (109 buckets). Up until the day of the procession, the idols that have been bathed will be kept apart. We call this event Ansara. The Chera Pahara ritual is carried out by the royal heir of Odisha. During the Chera Pahara event, the king brings the divinities and places them on chariots.

Jagannath Rath Yatra History

Puri, a prominent city in Odisha, hosts the Ratha Yatra. It is the wish of devotees for Lord Krishna, also known as Lord Jagannath, to travel to Mathura, the city of his birth. Every year, they put on this festival to satisfy his wish. If devotees participate in this festival with great devotion, they also think that they will be released from the cycle of birth and death. Legend has it that on this day, Lord Jagannath passed through the Mausi Maa Temple, the residence of his maternal aunt, on his way to Gundicha Temple. Along with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, he traveled there. As a result, there is an annual Jagannath Rath Yatra to commemorate the day.

Jagannath Rath Yatra Significance

Due to its widespread acclaim, this festival also draws tourists from other countries. The Ratha Yatra festival primarily signifies integration and equivalency. People have a good chance of seeing the divine being. On the day of the celebration, three deities are revered. They are Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, the elder brother of Lord Jagannath, and Lord Subhadra, the sister of both those brothers. The gods will be brought into the streets of Puri so that people can come to ask for blessings. Every deity has a vehicle.

Individual rath yatras are held at every place, but the major ones are always held at Puri cause of the establishment of the main temple there.
