International Olympic Day History

Doctor Gruss, a member of the International Olympic Committee from Czechoslovakia, reported on a World Olympic Day celebration in 1947 that would mainly serve as a day to promote the Olympic ideal during the 41st Session of the IOC in Stockholm. A few months later, in January 1948, during the 42nd IOC Session at St. Moritz, the project was approved. To commemorate the creation of the International Olympic Committee at the Sorbonne in Paris on June 23, 1894, when Pierre de Coubertin revived the Olympic Games, the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) were tasked with organizing this event and asked to select a date between June 17 and June 24.

On June 23, 1948, the world celebrated the first Olympic Day. The IOC President at the time, Sigfrid Edström, sent a message to all young people worldwide on this particular occasion.
