International Olympic Day 2024:
Quotes, Wishes, History, Significance & Posters
International Olympics Day is celebrated on the 23rd of June every year, though the main event of the Olympics takes place only once in 4 years. This legendary sporting event of the world originated in Ancient Greece about 3,000 years ago. In the 6th century BCE, the main event was classified into 4 further events and the most famous of them all was “The Olympic games” which was celebrated once every 4 years is not replicated by the modern Olympics that was started by Pierre De Coubertin in association with International Olympic Committee in the year 1894 during World War 1, with exactly 14 member states for the same.
The Games got their name because they were held at Olympia, a revered location close to the Peloponnese peninsula's western coast in southern Greece. Their impact was so great that the four-year intervals between the Olympic Games, or Olympiads, became a common way for ancient historians to measure time.
International Olympic Day History
Doctor Gruss, a member of the International Olympic Committee from Czechoslovakia, reported on a World Olympic Day celebration in 1947 that would mainly serve as a day to promote the Olympic ideal during the 41st Session of the IOC in Stockholm. A few months later, in January 1948, during the 42nd IOC Session at St. Moritz, the project was approved. To commemorate the creation of the International Olympic Committee at the Sorbonne in Paris on June 23, 1894, when Pierre de Coubertin revived the Olympic Games, the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) were tasked with organizing this event and asked to select a date between June 17 and June 24.
On June 23, 1948, the world celebrated the first Olympic Day. The IOC President at the time, Sigfrid Edström, sent a message to all young people worldwide on this particular occasion. Olympic Days were held in the countries of Portugal, Greece, Austria, Canada, as well, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Belgium.
The concept of International Olympic Day comes with a specialized run for the celebration of the day. Known as the “Olympic day run”. One could even argue that the main event of Olympic Day is the Olympic Day Run. Since its inception in 1987, NOCs have coordinated it as a way to commemorate Olympic Day and encourage participation in mass sports. In the first edition in 1987, there were 45 participating NOCs; today, there are over 150 participating NOCs.
International Olympic Day Significance
Olympic Day is evolving beyond a simple run or athletic competition. NOCs implement sports, cultural, and educational initiatives that are open to all people, irrespective of age, gender, social background, or level of athletic ability. These initiatives are based on the principles of "Move, learn, discover - Together for a better world." A lot of NOCs have introduced concerts as well as exhibitions to their celebration in recent years, and some nations have included the occasion in their curricula. Meetings between young people and elite athletes and the creation of new websites that point people to local programs are just two examples of the latest NOC initiatives. This facilitates participation in Olympic Day for all. The growth of social media in recent years has assisted the IOC in increasing participation.
The main aim of this activity is the promotion of Move, learn, discover - Together for a better world. It is finally leading to the betterment of the world, promoting mass health. This new pillar was unveiled in 2022. It addresses issues like sustainability, inclusivity, unity, and peace to unite people via sport to improve the world. The pillar will center on a new theme every year that will act as a unifying theme for the entire world.
The IOC and the Olympic Movement as a whole will also utilize digital and social media platforms in the run-up to and on June 23 to advertise Olympic Day events and the value of living an active lifestyle. Public participants, Olympians, fans, volunteers, celebrities, coaches, International and National Sports Federations, National Olympic Committees, and numerous other organizations join the movement by sharing online how they are participating in physical activity on Olympic Day or by supporting celebrations or events coordinated by National Federations and Olympic Committees using the hashtag #OlympicDay.
