Happy World Music Day 2024:
History, Significance, Wishes, Quotes & Posters
“Harmonium” is a musical instrument that is so vital to India now that we have mistaken its history to be specific to India, let be history, but we have deemed it to be a discovery of India. But today let's burst that bubble and take pride in knowing that the brilliance of harmonium is the brainchild of a French musician named Alexandre Debain in the year 1840.
This instrument which was first about to be banished from India as being termed “the bane of Indian music” is now one of the most prominent devices to trace back India's Musical History. Harmonium was introduced in India in the 19th Century by the colonizers of Europe but was quickly adopted and became a courtesan's favorite with its easy-to-use features, unlike that of a traditional Sarangi.
Music has been an important core subject for India, with famous thinkers and great Musicians from the Court of Akbar to today’s music industry. While musical geniuses like Tansen are known for bringing rain and drought just with their voice, music in India has a way with religion as well. Very different for all cultures, but it still is a binding subject for us.
World Music Day is a day of collaboration and celebration for all who love, adore, and are provoked by music. This daily activity of singing and hearing music has found its way towards being respected worldwide, in whatever form and in whatever tone or language. It is the singular language of tunes and rhythm that matters, regardless of any other differences.
World Music Day History
World Music Day was first celebrated in 1982 in France when it was introduced by then Director of Music and Dance at the French Ministry of Culture i.e. Maurice Fleuret. It was then known as “fête de la musique”, is now being celebrated in 1000 Cities across the World. This day is celebrated every year since then on 21st June.
The reason for discussing how Harmonium traveled from France to India is to understand the historical aspect of Indo-French Music as well, as to spread awareness about the common roots of the two countries. It is known that European culture though introduced the historical instrument, but the desi version of the same was created not very later. In 1875 Kolkata, Harmonium found its Indianized personality for the anti-colonizer musicians to use and despise. This version was created by Dwarkanath Ghosh to set free the identity of Indian Music in Harmoniums in a pure form.
World Music Day Significance
This is like asking what is the significance of music. World Music Day is here to celebrate the beauty of unity and diversity across the world in the language of music. This day celebrates the serenity of music in all its natural and twisted forms. This day encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to express themselves in forms and ways of music, be it singing or purely playing music, Simply listening to music is also enough for your participation.
This day is similar to the ode of Arthur William Edgar O'Shaughnessy, who termed the music makers as the dreamers of the world in his Poem “We are the music makers”. We believe music is significant for every life form and for the world to function in the peace that it does. It's the language of nature itself. Music is the main source of spreading our culture and recognizing cultures all over the world.
